Community Fundraiser Held in Support of Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin
Leaders from Columbus’ Somali community, joined by Palestinian, Nigerian, Russian, and Hispanic community leaders, attorneys, professionals, and advocates, gathered Monday evening for a fundraiser in support of Columbus City Council President Shannon G. Hardin.
SAPAC President Abdirizak Ahmed opened the event by highlighting challenges facing New American communities and the need for stronger representation. He expressed support for Hardin and praised him for standing with immigrant communities during increased ICE enforcement.
During the fundraiser, Hardin announced that he is strongly considering a campaign for mayor of Columbus.
“This is not my campaign. This is our campaign for the future of our city,” Hardin said.
Hardin shared that his mother worked as a receptionist at Columbus City Hall and that he spent time there as a child, experiences that shaped his belief that City Hall belongs to everyone.
“If City Hall is the people’s house, then council chambers are the people’s living room,” Hardin said.
Co-host Emmanuel spoke about Hardin’s humility and genuine empathy, while Khalid Turani highlighted his longstanding friendship with CAIR-Ohio and willingness to stand with minority communities. Grove City Councilmember Mohamed Omar praised Hardin’s commitment to fighting for all communities and ensuring that no one is left behind.
“President Hardin has shown up for our communities during difficult times,” said co-host Kawther Musa. “He listens, he stands with us, and his leadership is rooted in genuine empathy and service. We were proud to bring diverse communities together to support his continued leadership and work toward a stronger and more inclusive Columbus.”
